Fantasy cricket league platform Dream11 has got the title sponsorship for IPL 2020 with a bid of 222 Cr rupees. They whipped EdTech company Unacademy, BYJU’S& consumer goods companies TATA SONS, PATANJALI to win the right of title sponsorship. Dream11 is an Indian fantasy sports platform where people can play fantasy cricket, hockey, football, and basketball. Dream11 has grabbed the title sponsorship for this year only but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to confirm their deal for years 2021 & 2022. Although the IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel has said “if they give good bid next year their contract might get extended”.
WHY BCCI NEEDED A NEW SPONSOR THIS YEAR?
Earlier BCCI had given the contract to Chinese mobile making company VIVO. VIVO was given the sponsorship in the year 2015 when Pepsi disbanded its contract due to a match-fixing scandal. For the next 2 years (2016-2017) VIVO paid 200 Cr INR to BCCI for its sponsorship right. Again in 2017 VIVO signed 5 years deal with BCCI for 2199 Cr INR (439.8 each year). BCCI & VIVO suspended their contract this year due to INDIA-CHINA’s faceoff at the border. Another reason for this disband was the boycott of Chinese products by the dwellers of INDIA. BCCI needed a sponsorship badly & time was less so, they held an auction for title sponsorship & eventually Dream11 superseded VIVO as the main sponsors of IPL 2020.
CHINESE LINK WITH DREAM 11
Dream11 is an INDIAN fantasy league company but it has a Chinese investment which is Tencent LTD. But they have other investors also like Steasview, Kalaari Capital. Tencent holds about a 10 percent stake in Dream 11. While BCCI officials have said, more or less every company has Chinese investors in our country whether it is a tech, real estate, or retail entity. So, they can’t do anything with it.

MS DHONI is the biggest brand ambassador of Dream11. The entity has partnered with other cricketers also like JASPRIT BUMRAH, JOS Buttler, ROHIT SHARMA, CHRIS GAYLE, KANE WILLIAMSON, BEN STOKES, VIRAT KOHLI, ANDRE RUSSEL.
