Cricket in other parts of Europe apart from England, Ireland & Scotland sound strange because it has not gained so much popularity there. But undoubtedly Cricket is also spreading like a fire across the globe like another popular sports Football. Cricket is also getting recognition gradually in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and in all other European nations. So, to give Cricket its honor European Cricket Championship was played in Spain from July 29 to July 31. European Cricket Network conducted the inaugural tournament which changed the face of cricket in Europe. It was a 10 over the tournament. Total eight teams across Europe participated in the tournament. The teams were – Svanholm Cricket Club (Denmark), Dreux Cricket Club (France), Sport gemeinschaft Findorff (Germany), Janjua Cricket Club (Italy), Volharding Olympia Combinatie (Netherlands), Cluj Cricket Club (Romania), St Petersburg Lions (Russia), Catalunya Cricket Club. A total of 17 matches were played among 8 teams.
In the group stage, eight teams were divided into two groups. Each team played 3 matches with each other. two teams got qualified from each group. in the group stage 164 was the highest score in 10 overs by Durex Cricket club vs CLUJ Cricket club, in this match, Ahmed Nabi of Durex club scored 105 runs off 30 balls. It was such a huge score for any player in t10 cricket which is hard to score. Very few players have achieved this feat.
SEMI-FINALS OF EUROPEAN CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP
In the semifinals of the European cricket championship Catalunya Cricket Club, V.O.C Rotterdam, Svanholm Cricket Club & SG Findorff made their place by playing exceptionally well. in 1st semi-finals between Catalunya Cricket Club and V.O.C Rotterdam Catalunya won the toss & elected to bat first. They made 129 runs in 10 overs by losing 5 wickets, V.O.C Rotterdam chased down the score in just 8 overs. SG Findorff beat Svanholm Cricket Club in 2nd semi-finals. Svanholm scored 88 runs in 10 overs & SG went past the target in just 8.5 overs at La Manga Club in Spain.
FINALS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP
V.O.C Rotterdam faced SG Findorff in the finals of European cricket championship. SG Findorff won the toss & elected to bowl first. V.O.C Rotterdam 222 runs in 10 overs. Scott Edwards smashed 137 runs off 39 balls, which was the highest score of the tournament. SG Findorff managed to score 121 runs in 10 overs. Rotterdam’s Dirk Van Baren took three wickets for 8 runs in one over. V.O.C Rotterdam won the first title of European Cricket Championship.
- MAX O’DOWD OF ROTTERDAM RECEIVED THE MAN OF THE TOURNAMENT AWARD FOR SCORING 219 RUNS & TAKING 4 WICKETS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
