Virat Kohli

The 3rd most number of century scorer (70) in international cricket, Virat Kohli dominates the list of most test runs as captain among active cricketers with 5449 runs in 61 matches. Kohli is also India’s most successful Test skipper, thriving on 36 occasions in 61 matches to date. Kohli has tagged himself as an all-format player in international cricket by averaging more than 50 across three formats. With time, the Indian captain has enhanced his games in order to make runs in all conditions. The star batsman from Delhi recently led India to the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship. 

Joe Root

Current English leader Joe Root occupies the 2nd spot on the chart of the most runs in Test as captain among active cricketers. Root has amassed 4120 runs in the longest format of the game, which defines him as one of the finest leaders. He holds a decent captaincy record with 26 wins out of 52 matches. So far, he has notched up 8714 runs in 105 tests with an impressive average of 48.7. In the maiden World Test Championship event, Joe Root finished with 1660 runs in 20 matches, which was 2nd highest in the championship. 

Steve Smith 

One of the greatest test batsmen of all time, Steve Smith has amassed the 3rd most test runs among the active players as captain, 3659 runs. The current generation of bowlers find it hard to get Steve Smith out and irrespective of conditions, he makes sure that he gets on the top of any bowling lineup and keeps his team ahead in the game. Smith wears the crown of the No 1 Test batsman in the ICC test ranking. The ace batsman had a great time in the first-ever World Test Championship, finishing the tournament as the 3rd highest run-getter (1341 runs in 21 innings). Smith had a win percentage of 52.14 percent as a leader before getting axed after the ball-tampering incident in 2018.

Kane Williamson

One of the most humble cricketers of all time, Kiwi batsman is at the 4th position on the list of the most runs among active cricketers as captain, with 3193 runs. Kane Williamson latterly became the first skipper to win the World Test Championship title beating India at Southampton. Being one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era, he has scored 7230 runs in 85 matches, averaging 54 per innings. Williamson has been excellent as a skipper, winning 22 matches out of 37 with a commendable win percentage of 59.45.
