Shreyas Iyer may replace Rohit Sharma as captain in ODIs, according to some reports. The 30 year old middle order batter was recently ignored by the selectors for the T20 format of Asia Cup 2025 depite a stellar show in the IPL 2025.
Iyer's ODI career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Since making his ODI debut in 2017, he has mustered 2845 runs in 68 innings at 48.22 with the help of 5 centuries and 22 half centuries. The highlight of his career has been the outstanding batting performance in India's triumph in the Champions Trophy 2025, scoring 243 runs in 5 innings which was the second highest in the tournament.
He was in golden touch in the 2023 ODI World Cup too, he made 530 runs in 11 games at 66.25, including an important 105 off 70 balls in the semi-finals against New Zealand. The Mumbai boy led KKR to win the 2024 IPL before leading Punjab to their first play-offs since 2014. So, there would be no surprises if BCCI considers him as the successor of Rohit Sharma.
Shreyas Iyer is the best batsman no doubt but very unfortunate to see him outside the T20 Asia Cup India squad. He is true player but affected by politics.
