The Women’s T20 World Cup began in 2009 just after 2 years of the inception of the Men’s T20 World Cup. We all know that T20 is the most played format in women’s cricket hence it makes the Women’s T20 World Cup significant. For the first three years, this event was played among 8 teams, however, since 2014 10 teams have participated in the Women’s T20 World Cup. So far, ICC has conducted 7 editions of the Women’s T20 World Cup, where Australia dominates with 6 trophies, while England and West Indies lift the silverware once each. Women’s T20 World Cup Winners List 2009-2023

2009 Women’s T20 World Cup

England was the first team to win the T20 World Cup in 2009 and register their name on the Women’s T20 World Cup winners list. Out of 8 teams, The English side fought tooth and nail to make a place in the finals of this main event along with New Zealand. To set the stage ablaze in the final, England bowled out New Zealand for 95 runs at Lord’s and chased down the score in 17 overs. Katherine Burnt was the hero of the final for her 3/6 in 4 overs. However, England’s Clarie Taylor contributed massively to her team’s success with her golden run with the bat, scoring 199 runs in 5 matches in the tournament. 

2010 Women’s T20 World Cup

Australia won the 2010 Women’s T20 World Cup in West Indies by beating New Zealand in the ultimate game at Bridgetown and Alex Blackwell led Australia made their entry on the Women’s T20 World Cup winners list. Ellyse Perry’s fierce spell of 3/18 restricted Kiwis to 103 to celebrate the victory by 3 runs. This edition consisted of 8 top teams across the globe too, including India. Despite being the highest run-getter (147) in the event, Blackcap Sara McGlashan fell short to clinch the trophy with her team.

2012 Women’s T20 World Cup

Australia once again etched its name in 3rd place on the premium Women’s T20 World Cup winners list. The 2012 Women’s T20 World Cup was hosted in Sri Lanka. Eight teams in two groups played a total of 12 matches with each other in the group stage. Australia dominated their way to their 2nd consecutive finals and locked horns with England. In the nail bitter encounter, Australia bundled England to 138 runs and protected their 142 runs target to lift their 2nd title. English skipper Charlotte Edwards became the player of the series for amassing 172 runs, while Aussie medium pacer Julie Hunter ended as the highest wicket-taker with 11 scalps. 

2014 Women’s T20 World Cup

The 4th Place on the Women’s World Cup winners list features none other than mighty Australia. But 10 teams participated in the 2014 Women’s T20 World Cup, two more teams compared to the last edition. The tournament witnessed 25 matches in total. Surprisingly, due to sheer dominance and excellence, Australia again clashed with their arch-rival England in the finals in Mirpur. Australian bowling upset England one more time to set a low target of 105 runs and took their team home in just 16 overs. This time it was the Australian captain who led from the front, accumulating 257 runs in 6 matches and bagging the Man of the Series award. 

2016 Women’s T20 World Cup

The T20 specialist of International cricket, West Indies finds themselves in 5th place on the Women’s T20 World Cup winners chart. West Indies won all group matches and the semi-final against England before cementing their place in the finals against mighty Australia. Australia set a healthy target of 148, which West Indies chased down in the 19th over at Eden Gardens to lift their maiden T20 World Cup. Opener Hayley Matthews’s sensational 45 balls 66 aided the women in maroon to thrive. But it was the Caribbean skipper Stafanie Taylor who excelled throughout the tournament and grabbed the top award of Man of the Series for notching up 246 runs in 6 innings

2018 Women’s T20 World Cup

West Indies hosted the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup. All ten teams fared each other in 23 matches to get the final two spots. This time it was Australia who had an undefeated run in this marquee event. England clashed with their main rival Australia in the 3rd T20 Wpmen’s WC final in North Sound just to taste defeat for the 3rd time. Ashleigh Gardener’s all-round performance, 3 for 22 with the ball and 33* off 26 balls with the willow knocked England out to get Australia’s 4th title in the event. 

2020 Women’s T20 World Cup

In 2020, Australia got the privilege to host the Women’s T20 World Cup and scripted history by winning it for the 5th time to write their name on the Women’s T20 World Cup winners list. In the home conditions, Australia crashed all teams on their way and finally held the silverware when they beat India at MCG in the finals by putting a mammoth total of 184 on board. Aussie opener Beth Mooney had a dream tournament, becoming the Man of the Series for accumulating 259 runs in 6 innings. On the other hand, experienced Kangaroo fast bowler Megan Schutt was the highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets. 

2023 Women’s T20 World Cup

South Africa hosted the iconic 2023 Women’s T20 World. Australia continued their sheer dominance, winning the trophy for the 6th time, and Meg Lanning became the only skipper to lift the T20 World Cup trophy four times. Like every edition, Australia remained unbeaten in the entire tournament and defeated South Africa by 19 runs after planting a target of 157 runs, thanks to the magic batting of Beth Mooney who amassed 74 off 53 balls. Aussie veteran Ashleigh Gardener was adjudged the Man of the tournament for picking up 10 wickets and scoring 110 runs in 6 games. Maybe in the future too, Australia will keep signing its name on the top list of Women’s T20 World Cup winners list due to its unbelievable consistency of quality cricket.
