Breaking: India Withdraws from Asia Cup 2025, BCCI to Boycott All ACC Tournaments

In a dramatic turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed that India will not participate in the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to be hosted in Pakistan. The decision marks a major shake-up in the Asian cricket calendar, as the BCCI also announced a complete boycott of all upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournaments.

Why is India not playing in Asia Cup 2025?

According to senior BCCI officials, the withdrawal is directly linked to political tensions between India and Pakistan, with strong objections to the current ACC chairmanship held by Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi.

“The Indian team cannot play in a tournament run by an organization led by a Pakistani minister. It’s about national sentiment,” said a top BCCI source.

Impact on Asia Cup 2025 and Future ACC Events

India was initially expected to host the Asia Cup 2025 in T20 format, serving as a warm-up ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. With India’s exit, the tournament’s structure and hosting plans now hang in the balance.

This development also affects the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka next month, as India will not send its team.

A History of Tension on and off the Field

India last toured Pakistan in 2008. Since then, all India-Pakistan cricket encounters have been limited to ICC events or neutral venues. The 2023 Asia Cup adopted a hybrid model due to India’s unwillingness to play in Pakistan, with matches relocated to Sri Lanka.

Why has BCCI withdrawn from the Asia Cup 2025?

The BCCI has cited political reasons, particularly concerns over the ACC being chaired by a Pakistani government minister. This reflects India’s broader stance on avoiding bilateral sports ties with Pakistan due to ongoing diplomatic tensions.

Will India play against Pakistan in ICC tournaments?

Yes, India is still expected to face Pakistan in ICC tournaments held at neutral venues, such as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The boycott only affects ACC-organized events, not ICC-sanctioned competitions.
