Veteran India batsman Rohit Sharma has been included in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) preliminary squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England, as discussions continue over his future role within the side.
The BCCI has shortlisted 35 players as part of its initial pool for both the senior Test team and the India ‘A’ squad, with final selections expected to be announced by mid-May. The Test series is scheduled to begin on 20 June in England.
Rohit Sharma’s inclusion comes amid widespread speculation that the 38-year-old could step down from the captaincy or be phased out of the red-ball format entirely, following a run of underwhelming performances in Test cricket.
Captaincy Question Remains Open
While Sharma led India to glory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, his Test form has been under scrutiny. He averaged just 10.9 across his last eight innings and failed to make a significant impact during recent series against New Zealand and Australia.
Despite this, the selectors have reportedly kept him in contention due to his leadership credentials and extensive experience, particularly in overseas conditions.
A final decision on India’s Test captain for the England tour is yet to be made, with Jasprit Bumrah emerging as a potential successor. The fast bowler previously led India during their 2022 tour of England and is being considered for a larger leadership role.
Emerging Talent and Middle Order Options
India’s selectors are also looking to bolster the batting order, with Rajat Patidar and Karun Nair reportedly being considered for middle-order slots. Both are expected to feature in the India ‘A’ side that will shadow the main squad during the English summer.
The India ‘A’ tour is set to begin shortly after the IPL concludes on 25 May, providing a platform for fringe players to make their case ahead of the Test series.
