Shakib Returns to lead Bangladesh in Asia Cup and World Cup 2023

The news of Bangladesh appointing Shakib Al Hasan as the ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup marks a significant development for the team. Shakib Al Hasan’s vast experience as a seasoned all-rounder and his familiarity with the international cricket landscape make him a fitting choice for this leadership role.

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,”

Nazmul Hassan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president.

Beyond the Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bangladesh’s schedule is packed. They are set to face New Zealand in a white-ball series in September, followed by their participation in the World Cup in India starting on October 5. These engagements provide opportunities for skill refinement, performance assessment, and high-level competition on the global stage.

Shakib Al Hasan’s appointment as the new ODI captain of Bangladesh, succeeding Tamim Iqbal, comes in the wake of Tamim Iqbal’s resignation on August 3. A back injury that rendered him unable to participate in the upcoming Asia Cup prompted Tamim’s decision to step down.

Shakib Al Hasan’s comprehensive captaincy of Bangladesh in all three formats is a testimonial to his leadership talents and the faith that the team management has in his experience.

Shakib’s previous captaincy stints, including his initial period as captain from 2009 to 2011, showcase his past success in the role. His leadership during that period saw Bangladesh secure victories in 22 out of the 49 ODIs he captained, emphasizing his capability to steer the team to notable achievements.

In addition, his stand-in captaincy roles in ODIs in 2015 and 2017, during which he led the team in place of Mashrafe Mortaza, highlight his adaptability and skill in leadership.
