Maxwell’s injury adds to Punjab Kings’ challenges in a crucial IPL 2025 campaign.
Australia and Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is likely to miss the remainder of the IPL 2025 seasonafter suffering a fractured finger, confirmed by PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer during the toss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday.
The injury, which reportedly occurred ahead of Punjab’s previous clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), didn’t stop Maxwell from taking the field. However, the extent of the fracture has now raised serious doubts over his availability for the rest of the tournament.
Speaking to broadcasters before the game against CSK, Iyer stated, “Glenn has fractured his finger. We haven’t decided on a replacement yet, but he’s likely out for the rest of the season.”
Maxwell was replaced in the playing XI by domestic player Suryansh Shedge, with PBKS fielding only three overseas players for the fixture — a significant tactical shift that reflects the gravity of Maxwell’s absence.
PBKS teammate and fellow Australian Marcus Stoinis revealed that the injury was sustained before the KKR game but added that Maxwell pushed through the discomfort to support the team.
Struggles With Form Continue
The injury compounds a difficult IPL season for Maxwell, who has managed only 48 runs across matches and failed to make a significant impact with either bat or ball. The absence of the explosive all-rounder further complicates PBKS’s playoff hopes, as the team battles inconsistency in the league stages.
With key overseas players like Maxwell now sidelined, PBKS will need to reshuffle their strategy heading into the crucial final weeks of IPL 2025.
What’s Next?
Punjab Kings are expected to announce a replacement soon, subject to approval by the IPL Governing Council. Maxwell’s fitness will also be closely monitored by Cricket Australia, with an eye on upcoming international commitments.
