India will play Pakistan for the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal after thrashing Sri Lanka by 124 runs in the semi-final in Nisshin, Aichi, on Thursday. Ishan Kishan made 80 off 46 balls on a difficult pitch, and Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 45.
The final is on Saturday, October 3. Pakistan reached it by beating Bangladesh by six wickets in a shortened second semi-final, and Sri Lanka will meet Bangladesh in the bronze-medal match.
Kishan holds India’s innings together
India did not have it easy with the bat. They lost three top-order wickets early on a surface that offered plenty of turn, but Kishan counter-attacked and struck five sixes and four fours in his 80. His innings carried India to 169 for 7 from their 20 overs, a total that proved far more than enough.
Sri Lanka all out for 45
Jasprit Bumrah ripped through Sri Lanka’s top order early, and the chase never recovered. Bumrah and Axar Patel took two wickets each, two batters were run out, and Sri Lanka were all out in 9.5 overs. Only one of their batters reached double figures.
- India: 169/7 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 80 off 46)
- Sri Lanka: 45 all out in 9.5 overs (Jasprit Bumrah 2 wickets, Axar Patel 2 wickets)
- Result: India won by 124 runs
India vs Pakistan for gold
India are the defending champions, having won the men’s cricket gold at Hangzhou 2022. Saturday’s final will be the latest chapter in cricket’s biggest rivalry, on the same day India’s men’s hockey team plays for gold after beating Pakistan in their own semi-final.
