Introduction About Jhulan Goswami

Jhulan Goswami-Bengal hasn’t seen the rise of many international level cricketers from its fields. But there are few names that have made Bengal proud enough to inspire. From Bengal, has risen ‘Dada’ Sourav Ganguly, Former Indian Men’s Cricket Team Captain, and a well-renowned name in the International Cricket Arena. Also from Bengal has risen another Former Captain for the Women’s Cricket Team, Jhulan Nishit Goswami, the Chakdaha Express. 

Jhulan Goswami’s Family And Childhood Life

Jhulan Nishit Goswami was born on November 25^th, 1982 to Nishith Goswami and Jharna Goswami at Chakdaha. A fan of football from her childhood, ‘Babul’ got her interest in Cricket watching the 1992 Cricket World Cup on TV. She started to play the game at the age of 15. Jhulan Goswami’s interest in cricket peaked when she saw Belinda Clark, Australian batswoman in the 1997 Women’s Cricket World Cup, where she volunteered as a ball-girl. Jhulan Goswami had her part of the struggle in the game in the earlier days of her career. She had to travel to Kolkata to train as Chakdaha didn’t have proper amenities. She used to get on the 5:30 A. M. Ranaghat Local from Chakdaha every day of the week to get to Sealdah and then used to travel by bus to her camp, Vivekananda Park nets for training.

Jhulan Goswami’s International and Domestic Career

After her initial days of struggle, Jhulan Goswami was picked up for the Bengal Team in domestic cricket of India. On January 6^th, 2002, at the age of 19, Goswami made her debut in International Cricket against England in a WODI match at Chennai. Her test debut was also quickly followed on 6^th January the same year at Chennai. Her WT20I debut was also against England on August 5^th, 2006 at Derby. The Fast Bowling All-Rounder, Jhulan, surprised everyone by her pace and batting ability in the Women’s Cricket arena. In fact she became the fastest Women bowler to bowl constantly at 120 Kph after Cathryn Fitzpatrick.

Her performances started to appear under limelight, when India won a test Series in England against England for the first time. Jhulan Goswami along with Indian Captain Mithali used all of their experience to guide and help the young team to a victory. Jhulan had her display of batting in the first test at Leicester, where she scored a half century as a night-watchman. She also achieved her career-best figures in tests of 10 for 78 in the second test at Taunton and helped the team win a test series in England for the very first time. Jhulan Goswami also has taken most of her wickets in WODIs against England at an average of just 18.64. She became a part of the Asian team in the 2007 Afro-Asian tournament. She even was awarded the ICC Women’s cricketer of the Year in 2007.

Jhulan Goswami succeeded her team mate Mithali Raj as the Captain of India in 2008. She led Indian Women’s Cricket Team till 2011 to pass on the baton. In 2008 she became the fourth Women Cricketer to reach 100 WODI wickets. Jhulan Goswami captained the team for 25 ODIs in her tenure.

Jhulan Goswami has taken 40 test wickets in 10 test matches. She is the highest wicket taker in WODIs surpassing the 180 wickets record of Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick. Goswami achieved this feat against South Africa at PUK Oval in May 2017. On February 7^th, 2018, Jhulan became the first woman cricketer to have taken 200 wickets in WODIs. These 200 wickets were taken in 166 matches at an average of 21.76. Jhulan took two five and four wicket hauls in this journey of 200 wickets. In the 2011 ICC Women’s World Cup, though India lost in the finals against England, Jhulan Goswami had her career best WODI figures against New Zealand in the tournament (6/31). She has also picked up 50 WT20I wickets. She also became the first women player to reach the 300 wicket mark in International cricket against Sri Lanka. In November 2020, Jhulan Goswami was also nominated to be the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade.

Jhulan Goswami’s Retirement

Jhulan Goswami retired from International Women’s T20I in August 2018. She played her last Test against South Africa on November 16^th, 2015. Her last Women’s ODI was against South Africa on March 17^th, 2021.

Jhulan Goswami is not married till date and is not known to be in any romantic relationship. She enjoys watching football, her childhood dream and also enjoys movies. She likes to spend her time reading books. Jhulan also announced her upcoming biography, “Chakdaha Express” on July 13^th, 2021, directed by Sushanta Das, depicting the journey of the girl from Chakdaha in the Camp of Kolkata to the grounds of London.
