Highest Individual Score In Test 

Test cricket is the most difficult format of the game. A batter needs to have technique, patience, and perseverance to bat for an extended period to get a commendable score in the longest format of the game. Bowlers deliver on good length along with swing and turn to get the better of the batsmen in tests hence it’s significant for the batters to stay calm and play accordingly. Over the years, some great batters have displayed their master batting and scored beyond the belief of their opponents in an innings. Let’s contemplate the batsmen with the highest individual score in the test.

Brian Lara 

One of the greatest batsmen to ever play test cricket, Brian Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in the test. The West Indian legend scored 400* off 582 balls batting for 778 minutes against a decent pace attack of England in St John’s in 2004. Lara made Flintoff, Harmison, and Simon Jones tired and clueless with his impeccable innings, which includes 43 fours and 4 sixes. His audacious batting took West Indies to 751 in the 1st innings and the match ended as a draw. 

Matthew Hayden 

The bravest opener to play for Australia, Matthew Hayden gets 2nd place on the elite list of the highest individual score in test. The Southpaw played a sensational knock of 380 off 437 balls against a meek Zimbabwe side in the 1st innings of 1st test at Perth in 2003. With a reputation for bashing the bowlers in all formats, the Australian charismatic batter went berserk against the visitors, steering the bowlers to endure him for more than 10 hours. 

Brain Lara 

The former West Indian captain, Brain Lara once again finds himself in the 3rd spot on the tally of the highest individual score in the test. It was again England who had to face the batting exploits of renowned Brian Lara. He accumulated 375 runs in 538 balls in 1994 at the same venue (St Johns) where he later got his quadruple century. But on this occasion, Lara only hit 45 fours without any maximum. 

Mahela Jayawardene 

Former Srilankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene notched up 374 runs in 572 balls against mighty South Africa at SSC in the 1st test of Proteas tour of Srilanka in 2006, the 4th highest individual score in tests. In the same match, Kumar Sangakkara got 287 runs and stitched a magnificent 624 runs partnership with Jayawardene for the 3rd wicket to push South Africa out of the equation in the match. Riding on their batting, Lanka posted 756 runs and won the match by an innings and 153 runs. 

Garfield Sobers

Regarded as the greatest all-rounder of all time, ex-Caribbean player Sir Garfield Sobers occupies the honorable list of the highest individual score in the test. The ace batter from Barbados’s best innings of 365 runs came against Pakistan in the 3rd test of Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies in 1958. Playing this mammoth innings against a quality Pakistan bowling was an achievement in itself. Sir Sober’s record lasted for 36 years until Lara broke it in 1994.
