India retained their Asian Games men’s hockey title on Saturday, October 3, 2026, beating Malaysia 5-1 in the final in Japan. Captain Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners, and the win also gives India direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

It is India’s fifth men’s hockey gold at the Asian Games and the first time they have won the title at back-to-back editions. It came a day after the women’s team beat China 1-0 for their own gold, so this is the first Asian Games where both Indian hockey teams finished on top.

How the final played out

Malaysia made India work early. Harmanpreet struck first with a drag-flick from a penalty corner in the opening quarter, but Shello Silverius equalised from open play a few minutes later, so the teams were level at 1-1 after 15 minutes.

Jugraj Singh restored the lead with another penalty-corner conversion in the second quarter, and India went into half-time 2-1 up. Hardik Singh then scored from a penalty stroke in the third quarter to give his side some breathing room.

The last quarter was all India. Shilanand Lakra made it 4-1, and Harmanpreet finished the scoring with his second penalty-corner goal of the match, shortly before the final hooter.

Key numbers

  • Result: India 5, Malaysia 1 (1-1 after the first quarter, 2-1 at half-time)
  • India’s scorers: Harmanpreet Singh (2, both penalty corners), Jugraj Singh (penalty corner), Hardik Singh (penalty stroke), Shilanand Lakra
  • Malaysia’s scorer: Shello Silverius
  • India’s Asian Games men’s hockey golds: 5 (1966, 1998, 2014, 2022, 2026)
  • Olympic spot: qualified directly for LA 2028

Road to gold and what it means

Getting to the final was the hard part. India needed a late winner from Abhishek to edge Pakistan 4-3 in the semi-final. Against Malaysia they were much more in control, especially after the break.

Booking the LA 2028 place now is a big deal. Winning the continental title means India skip the Olympic qualifying tournaments and can plan the next two years around preparation rather than qualification. For Harmanpreet, who also led India to gold at the last Asian Games in Hangzhou, it is a second continental title as captain. Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, part of the 2014 and 2022 winning squads, now has three Asian Games golds, the most by any Indian player.

The two hockey golds add to a strong final weekend for India in Aichi-Nagoya, which also saw the men’s cricket team beat Pakistan to retain their gold. For more results and analysis, see our hockey news section.
