Shai Hope made an unbeaten 162 off 143 balls as West Indies chased down 352 to beat India by five wickets in the third and final ODI at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday, October 3, 2026. It is the highest successful run chase in West Indies’ ODI history, and it came after KL Rahul’s unbeaten 129 had lifted India to 351 for 7. India still won the three-match series 2-1.

Rahul and Rohit rescue India after early double strike

India chose to bat after winning the toss but were rocked early by Jayden Seales, who removed Shubman Gill for 1 and Virat Kohli for a first-ball duck. Gill had made headlines earlier in the series with his record-breaking double century in Guwahati, but there was no repeat this time.

Rohit Sharma steadied the innings with 92 off 85 balls, sharing a recovery stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad (57 off 69) before Keemo Paul dismissed him in the 25th over, eight short of a hundred. Along the way, Rohit completed 10,000 ODI runs as an opener. Rahul then took charge in the second half of the innings and finished unbeaten on 129, his ninth ODI century, while Naman Dhir (30 off 21) and Anshul Kamboj (17 off 9) added quick runs at the end. Seales was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with 3 for 62.

Hope anchors a record chase

Mohammed Siraj struck early in the reply, but Hope built the chase around himself and was still there at the finish. Amir Jangoo backed him with a brisk 67 off 56 balls, and Keemo Paul followed his two wickets with a useful 44. In the closing overs, Gudakesh Motie’s unbeaten 19 helped Hope finish the job, and West Indies got home with 10 balls to spare.

The result gave the visitors something to take home from a series India had already sealed by winning the first two games.

Records and key numbers

  • 150+ – Hope became the first wicketkeeper-captain to score more than 150 in an ODI innings.
  • 129* – KL Rahul’s unbeaten knock was his ninth ODI hundred.
  • 10,000 – Rohit Sharma’s ODI runs as an opener, reached during his 92.

What it means for India

India take the series, but failing to defend 351 at home is a worry for the bowling group, with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 now about a year away. For more on the format, see our ODI coverage and the latest sports news.
