KCA Suspends S. Sreesanth for 3 Years Over Remarks on Sanju Samson’s Exclusion from Team India

Former India pacer penalized for “defamatory” comments against Kerala Cricket Association in Samson row.

In a dramatic turn of events in Indian domestic cricket, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has suspended former Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth for three years, following his public criticism over Sanju Samson’s omission from the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The decision was finalized during a special general body meeting of the KCA held on April 30 in Kochi. The governing body stated that Sreesanth’s recent public statements were “false and defamatory,” violating his contractual obligations with the state association.

What Triggered the Suspension?

Sreesanth, who was serving as the mentor and brand ambassador of the Kollam Aries Sailors franchise in the Kerala Cricket League, openly expressed his displeasure over the treatment of local cricketing talent. In a widely shared video and social media post, he accused the KCA of neglecting Malayali cricketers and prioritizing players from other states.

He specifically cited the exclusion of Sanju Samson, a Kerala-born cricketer and prominent Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, calling it a reflection of poor support from the state’s cricket administration.

“Sanju Samson has been consistent and deserved a place in the Champions Trophy squad. The KCA should have fought for him instead of remaining silent,” Sreesanth said in a recent interview.

KCA’s Response and Show-Cause Notice

In retaliation, the KCA issued a show-cause notice, calling Sreesanth’s comments damaging to the reputation of the association. The statement also referenced his past involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, arguing that while the criminal charges were dismissed, Sreesanth was not officially acquitted.

“Mr. Sreesanth’s remarks are defamatory and misrepresent the efforts of the association. His conduct is in breach of his role as a mentor and brand ambassador,” said a KCA official.

Fallout and Reaction

The three-year suspension means Sreesanth will not be allowed to participate in any KCA-sanctioned events, including mentorship roles, tournaments, or media partnerships related to Kerala cricket.

This controversy adds fuel to the ongoing debate about transparency, regional representation, and the politics within India’s domestic cricket ecosystem. Supporters of Sreesanth argue the punishment is excessive and silences critical voices, while others claim discipline is necessary to protect the institution’s credibility.

What’s Next?

Neither Sreesanth nor Sanju Samson has issued an official statement following the suspension. Cricket fans and experts across the country are now watching closely to see if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will weigh in or remain silent on the matter.
