The experienced fast bowler was down with Covid-19 which gave rise to doubts regarding his selection early on but now has been declared fit to play and has joined his teammates in Brisbane already.

Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur too flew to Australia with Shami as player reserves for the tournament with the latter getting his spot due to Deepak Chahar, who was one of the reserves, sustaining a back injury.

India is to play its first group stage match against Pakistan on 23rd October and whether Mohammad Shami will be in the playing XI is still a question but his pace coupled with the exposure he has of performing in high pressure matches makes him a promising prospect to be included in the XI.
