The mini-auction for the IPL 2024 was held on 19th December 2023 in the Coca-Cola arena in Dubai. A total of 333 players went under the hammer where 214 were Indians and 119 were overseas players. Only 77 players could be bought today, including 30 foreigners. Gujarat Titans had the biggest purse of INR 38.15 cr while Lucknow Super Giants participated with the lowest budget of INR 13.15 cr. Mitchell Starc (24.75 cr)
Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in IPL history with the highest bid of INR 24.75 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders. Starc is returning to IPL after 9 years, his last appearance was for RCB in 2015. An impressive outing in the recently concluded 2019 World Cup which saw him taking 16 wickets in 10 games sparked the bidding war between Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders but KKR gave their all to have him on their side. Starc has taken 34 wickets in 27 matches at an impressive strike rate of 17.06.
Pat Cummins (20.50 cr)
In the early hours of the IPL 2024 auction, Pat Cummins created history by becoming the first player in the IPL to cross the INR 20 cr mark in the auction. It was much anticipated that the 2023 World Cup-winning Australian captain would attract the interest of the franchises. He made RCB and SRH engage in an ardent bidding war where Sunrisers Hyderabad placed the highest bid of INR 20.50 cr.
Daryl Mitchell (14 cr)
Premium Kiwi all-rounder Daryl Mitchell was the 3rd most expensive player of the IPL 2024 auction. He received a whopping INR 14 cr from Chennai Super Kings in the event. Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings were fighting for him in the auction initially. CSK started raising their paddle after DC pulled out and finally signed him for the Yellow Army. Mitchell’s inclusion has been probably to fill the void left by English all-rounder Ben Stokes. Further, he had a fascinating performance in the 2023 World Cup with 552 runs at 69.00 average.
Harshal Patel (11.75 cr)
The bowling all-rounder from Gujarat, Harshal Patel was the highest-bid player among Indians in the IPL 2024 auction. Punjab Kings purchased him for a handsome amount of INR 11.75 cr after beating Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergianst in the spectacular bidding war.
Alzarri Joseph (11.50 cr)
West Indian electrifying fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was sold for a whooping INR 11.50 cr to Royal Challengers Bangalore, the most expensive player in the 2024 IPL auction among West Indians. Joseph also received bids from Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Supergiants, and Chennai Super Kings, however, RCB was rigid in their decision to buy him and succeeded. The lanky seamer was with Gujarat Ginats for the last 2 years and did a decent job for the team with 14 wickets in 16 games.
