BCCI (Board of Control For Cricket) has finally brought a revolution in women’s cricket by starting the Women’s IPL. Women’s IPL or The Women’s Premier League will not only help to groom and grow Indian cricket but will also increase the income of women cricketers which is lower compared to men cricketers. The auction for the 2023 Women’s IPL was held at Jio Convention Center in Mumbai on 13th February. In that auction, we witnessed a great bidding war among franchises to buy their desirable players. A total of 448 players across the world went under the hammer in the historical auction. Let’s have a look at the most expensive players in the Women’s IPL.
The dazzling opener of the Indian women’s team, Smriti Mandhana was the most expensive player in the Women’s IPL 2023 auction. Mandhana was the first player to go under the hammer and almost every franchise tried to rope her into their squad but eventually, Royal Challengers Bangalore won the bidding war and bought her for a whooping INR 3.4 Cr. By bringing in Mandhana, RCB did not only get an excellent experience batsman but a captain too for their team.
The 25-years-old cricketer from Australia, Ashleigh Gardener grabs the 2nd spot on the elite list of the most expensive player in the Women’s IPL. The classy all-rounder got a buyer in form of the Delhi Capitals for handsome money of INR 3.2 Cr. Gardener became catchy among franchises due to her twin ability of off-spin bowling and destructive batting which would also bring balance to the side.
English fast-bowling all-rounder Natalie Sciver finds herself in 3rd position in terms of being the most expensive player in the Women’s IPL. Sciver automatically becomes a charming player to be a part of any T20 side due to her exceptional batting ability along with effective medium-fast bowling. The trailblazer from England will serve Mumbai Indians in the inaugural WPL for a tidy sum of INR 3.20 Cr.
An importan cog of the Indian Women’s team, Deepti Sharma has also made it to the supreme chart of the most expensive player in the Women’s IPL with a salary of INR 2.6 Cr given by UP Warriorz. The UP-based WIPL team showed faith in the competency of Deepti’s left-hand batting and wicket-taking off-spin bowling.
The rising star of the Indian women’s team Jemimah Rodrigues was sold to the Delhi Capitals for a massive amount of INR 2.2 Cr, which made her the 5th most expensive player in the Women’s IPL. Just a day before the auction, Jemimah played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 53 runs off 38 balls against the arch-rival Pakistan in the group match of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. It definitely aided her to bag this huge deal.
