Shreyas Iyer Dropped from India’s Test Squad for England Series, Ajit Agarkar Says “No Room for Him”

Shreyas Iyer Dropped from India’s Test Squad Ahead of England Series: Ajit Agarkar Explains Selection Call.

In a major development ahead of the India vs England Test series starting June 20, 2025, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been excluded from the Indian Test squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed the decision, citing the current team composition and performance metrics as primary reasons behind Iyer’s omission.

Why Was Shreyas Iyer Dropped?

Speaking to the media, Agarkar said, “Shreyas has done well in white-ball formats and domestic cricket, but right now, there’s no room for him in the Test side.” The statement comes amid growing competition in the Indian batting lineup and signals a strategic shift as India prepares for a challenging home series against England.

Squad Changes: Youth and Experience Blend

The revamped Test squad includes a mix of youth and experience. Shubman Gill has been named the new Test captain, with Rishabh Pant returning as vice-captain. In a surprise move, Karun Nair has been recalled to the Test setup after eight years, while B. Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh have received their maiden Test call-ups.

Iyer’s Form and Controversy

Shreyas Iyer’s form in red-ball cricket has been under scrutiny. During the 2024 Duleep Trophy, he managed only 104 runs in four innings. Additionally, he was left out of the BCCI’s central contract list earlier this year after failing to participate in domestic tournaments despite being asked to. Though he cited a back injury, his attendance at a Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp during this period reportedly did not sit well with the selectors.

A BCCI official remarked, “His shot selection was questionable even in favorable conditions. We expect a higher level of application from a player of his experience.”

What’s Next for Iyer?

With the emergence of promising talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, and strong performances from KL Rahul and Pant, Iyer faces stiff competition to reclaim a spot in the squad. Consistent performances in the domestic circuit and a clear commitment to red-ball cricket could help him force a comeback.
