Cricket Returns to Asian Games for 2026 Edition in Japan

T20 Cricket Returns at 2026 Asian Games in Japan Ahead of LA Olympics.

Cricket has officially been included in the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, confirming the sport’s growing relevance in the global multi-sport landscape.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) gave the green light for cricket to feature once again, with the decision expected to be formally announced following high-level meetings with the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC) this week. The 20th edition of the Asian Games is set to be held from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

This marks cricket’s consecutive appearance at the Games after a successful return in Hangzhou 2023, where rain-affected matches led to some shared medals. India claimed gold in both the men’s and women’s categories in the previous edition, enhancing cricket’s profile in the Asian multi-sport framework.

Venue Challenges and Infrastructure Hurdles

Japan’s limited cricketing infrastructure presents logistical challenges for the organisers. With the country having just one dedicated international-standard cricket venue in Tochigi—located over three hours from Nagoya—the OCA is actively exploring options to repurpose a baseball stadium for cricket matches during the Games.

Despite this, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) has shown enthusiastic support. JCA CEO Naoki Alex Miyaji said:
“This would leave a fantastic legacy and help promote cricket significantly across Japan.”

Cricket in Asian Games: A Strategic Step Before LA 2028

The decision is widely seen as a strategic stepping stone towards cricket’s re-entry into the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where T20 cricket is slated to make its Olympic debut after more than a century.

The inclusion further strengthens cricket’s visibility on the international sporting calendar and aligns with the ICC’s broader objective of globalising the game beyond traditional strongholds.

What’s Next?

The final confirmation of the full sports programme for the 2026 Asian Games will be made at the OCA General Assembly scheduled for April. Organisers remain optimistic about overcoming venue issues and delivering a successful cricket competition in Japan.
