ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup Winners List
The ICC T20 World Cup is the shortest format ICC tournament. Initially, it used to occur every year (2007-2016). But After 2016 it has started happening every four years. It’s world’s one of the most-watched sports events. ICC conducts it in various countries across the globe. So far six ICC T20 Cricket World Cup events have been conducted. Every year ten teams participate in this championship. The first-ever T20 International was played between ENGLAND and New Zealand women’s teams, where New Zealand women won the match by nine runs in 2004. AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND played the first-ever men’s T20 match in 2005 at Eden Park, Australia had a victory in that match. After 2006 the shortest format of the game started gaining popularity eventually ICC conducted the first-ever T20 World Cup. Here is the updated ICC T20 World Cup Winners list in brief.

T20 WC 2007
The inaugural ICC T20 World Cup 2007 was conducted in South Africa from 11 to 24 September. 12 countries from all over the world took part in this tournament. There were 4 groups consisted of 12 teams.
IN Group A- WEST INDIES, SOUTH AFRICA & BANGLADESH.
WITHIN Group B- AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND & ZIMBABWE.
In Group C- SRI LANKA, NEW ZEALAND, KENYA.
Group D-INDIA, PAKISTAN& SCOTTLAND.
Each team played 2 matches to qualify for the quarter-finals. The teams of quarter-finals were INDIA, AUSTRALIA, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, NEW ZEALAND, ENGLAND, SOUTH AFRICA & BANGLADESH. Only New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan & India could make their place in semis. Pakistan & India met each other in the final and India won the first-ever ICC T20 World Cup under MS Dhoni’s leadership by beating Pakistan at Wanderers stadium in South Africa. Aussie batsman Mathew Hayden made the highest runs in the series (265), Umar Gul of Pakistan became the highest wicket-taker with 13 wickets. Shahid Afridi was the man of the series for his all-round show (91 runs & 12 wickets). So the Indian Cricket team was named as the 1st ever ICC T20 World Cup Winner. MS Dhoni was only 26 years old when he led the Indian Cricket Team to T20 World Cup 2007 and it’s a remarkable achievement at such age.
T20 WC 2009
England hosted the second edition of the T20 World Cup in 2009 from 5th to 21st June. A total of 12 nations that participated in the tournament were divided into 4 groups.
IN Group A-INDIA, BANGLADESH & IRELAND
WITHIN Group B-PAKISTAN, ENGLAND, NETHERLANDS
IN Group C- AUSTRALIA, SRI LANKA, WEST INDIES
Group C- NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH AFRICA, SCOTTLAND
In the group stage, each team played 2 matches to get into the quarter-finals. The quarter-finalists were INDIA, ENGLAND, SOUTH AFRICA, WEST INDIES, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, NEW ZEALAND& IRELAND. South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and West Indies made into semi-finals. In the final, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka to get its first-ever T20 crown under Younis Khan’s captaincy. Sri Lankan Batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan scored the highest run in the tournament (317) & was conferred Man of the Series award, while Umar Gul got the most wickets (13). Shahid Afridi emerged as the best all-rounder of the 2009 T20 World Cup. Pakistan Cricket team won the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup for the first time.
T20 WORLD CUP 2010
West Indies hosted the 3rd ICC T20 World Cup in 2010. 12 teams played 27 matches in this championship being in four groups. This World Cup was supposed to be played in 2011 but due to the 2011 World Cup, it happened in 2010.

Group B- SRI LANKA, NEW ZEALANDN ZIMBABWE
IN Group C-SOUTH AFRICA, INDIA, AFGHANISTAN
Group D- ENGLAND, WEST INDIES, IRELAND
In the initial stage, every team played 2 matches to seal places in the quarter-finals. The eight teams of quarter-finals were ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA, INDIA, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH AFRICA & WEST INDIES. SRILANKA, ENGLAND, PAKISTAN, AUSTRALI landed into the semis. In the final England defeated Australia & won its first title. Mahela Jayawardene scored the highest run (302) & Dirk Nannes grabbed 14 wickets, which was the highest but Kevin Petersen became the Man of the Series for stupendous batting. England Cricket team won their first ICC tournament in form of the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.
T20 WORLD CUP 2012
So The fourth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2012 was held in Sri Lanka. 12 teams played 27 matches among them, staying in four different groups. Sri Lanka hosted the tournament for the first time.
IN Group A-ENGLAND, INDIA, AFGHANISTAN
WITHIN Group B-AUSTRALIA, WEST INDIES, IRELAND
Group C-SRI LANKA, ZIMBABWE, SOUTH AFRICA
WITH Group D- PAKISTAN, NEW ZEALAND, BANGLADESH
Therefore each team played 2 matches. Eight teams SRI LANKA, WEST INDIES, NEW ZEALAND, ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA, PAKISTAN, SOUTH AFRICA, and INDIA clashed in the quarter-finals. However, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies, and Australia faced each other in semis. West Indies defeated host Sri Lanka and won the cup for the first time under Darren Sammy’s captainship and the West Indies Cricket team became the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup Winner.
Shane Watson amassed the most runs, 249 runs, and got the Man of the Series award. Ajanta Mendis became the highest wicket-taker (15).
T20 WORLD CUP 2014
Bangladesh hosted the 5th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2014. 10 teams participated in the main event by playing 35 matches in total. 16 countries were INDIA, PAKISTAN, SRI LANKA, BANGLADESH, AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND, NEW ZEALAND, SOUTH AFRICA, WEST INDIES, NETHERLANDS. Each team played 4 matches in the group stage & got into the quarter-finals. The top two teams of each group made their place in the semi-finals (SRI LANKA, INDIA, WEST INDIES, SOUTH AFRICA). Sri Lanka beat India in the final & wore their first crown under Dimuth Karunaratne’s leadership. Virat Kohli scored the highest run in the tournament (319) & was bestowed the Man of the Series award. On the other hand, Imran Tahir took the highest wicket in the series (12). The Sri Lanka cricket team lifted the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup at the end.
T20 WORLD CUP 2016
The sixth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 was hosted by India from 8th March to 3rd April. 10 teams played the main event. India was hosting it for the first time. Teams were segregated into two groups.
Group A-WEST INDIES, ENGLAND, SOUTH AFRICA, SRI LANKA, AFGHANISTAN
Group B-NEW ZEALAND, INDIA, BANGLADESH, PAKISTAN, AUSTRALIA
Each team played four matches and the top two teams got qualified from respective groups. In semis England, New Zealand, India & West Indies fought with each other to seal places in the final. The final match was played at Eden Gardens between England and West Indies. Carlos Braithwaite’s four consecutive sixes against Ben Stokes in the final over helped West Indies to win the World Cup for the second time under Darren Sammy’s captaincy. Tamim Iqbal made the highest run in the tournament (295). Similarly, Mohammad Nabi was the highest wicket-taker with 12 scalps. Ace batsman Virat Kohli was Man of the Series for his exceptional batting performance throughout the series (293). The West Indies Cricket team wore the crown of the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup.
T20 WORLD CUP 2021
The BCCI hosted the 2021 T20 World Cup IN UAE and Oman. 12 teams were divided into 2 groups for the group stage. In the first group, England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka played among each other. The other group consisted of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Scotland, Namibia, and New Zealand. Cricket fans watched the clashes between England and New Zealand, and Pakistan and Australia in the semi-finals. The final was held in Dubai, Australia thrashed New Zealand by 8 wickets to win their maiden title. Aussie opener David Warner bagged the Man of the Series award for 289 runs in 7 matches. Although, the pride of Pakistan, Babar Azam amassed the most runs with 303 runs in 6 matches. In the bowling department, Wanindu Hasaranga had the most scalps, 16 wickets in 8 matches.
T20 World Cup 2022 Winner
The 8th edition of the T20 World Cup was hosted by Cricket Australia in 2022. Total of 12 teams clashed with each other in the super 12 stage and four of them made a place in the semi-final- India, New Zealand, Pakistan & England. The semi-finalists of the previous year’s T20 World Cup made it to the final this year. With the heroics of Sam Curran and Ben Stokes England beat Pakistan in the final to clinch their 2nd t20 World Cup title after 12 years. Sam Curran bagged the Man of the tournament award for getting 13 wickets in 6 innings.
