India are the most successful team in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history, with three titles (2007, 2024 and 2026). Below is the complete list of T20 World Cup winners from the first edition in 2007 to 2026, followed by a short recap of every tournament: the final, the leading run-scorer, the leading wicket-taker and the Player of the Tournament.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Winners List (2007–2026)

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is the ICC‘s tournament for the shortest international format. The first edition was held in South Africa in 2007, and the event has usually been played every two years since. The 2020 edition was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the tournament returned in 2021. Ten editions have now been completed, and the field has grown from 12 teams in 2007 to 20 teams from 2024 onwards.

T20 internationals themselves began a few years earlier. The first women’s T20I was played between England and New Zealand in 2004, with New Zealand winning by nine runs, and the first men’s T20I was played between New Zealand and Australia at Eden Park in 2005, which Australia won.

T20 World Cup 2007 Winner: India

The inaugural ICC T20 World Cup 2007 was held in South Africa from 11 to 24 September. Twelve teams were split into four groups of three:

1. Group A: West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh
2. Group B: Australia, England, Zimbabwe
3. Group C: Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Kenya
4. Group D: India, Pakistan, Scotland

The top two teams from each group advanced to the Super 8 stage: India, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, South Africa and Bangladesh. New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan and India reached the semi-finals, and India beat Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers in Johannesburg to win the first T20 World Cup under MS Dhoni, who was only 26 at the time.

Australia’s Matthew Hayden was the top run-scorer (265), Pakistan’s Umar Gul took the most wickets (13), and Shahid Afridi was Player of the Tournament for his all-round show (91 runs and 12 wickets).

T20 World Cup 2009 Winner: Pakistan

England hosted the second edition of the T20 World Cup in 2009 from 5 to 21 June. Twelve teams were divided into four groups:

1. Group A: India, Bangladesh, Ireland
2. Group B: Pakistan, England, Netherlands
3. Group C: Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies
4. Group D: New Zealand, South Africa, Scotland

India, England, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Ireland reached the Super 8 stage. South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies made the semi-finals, and Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s to win their first T20 title under Younis Khan.

Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan scored the most runs (317) and was Player of the Tournament, while Umar Gul again took the most wickets (13).

T20 World Cup 2010 Winner: England

The West Indies hosted the third ICC T20 World Cup in 2010, brought forward from 2011 because the 50-over World Cup was scheduled for that year. Twelve teams played 27 matches:

1. Group A: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia
2. Group B: Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe
3. Group C: South Africa, India, Afghanistan
4. Group D: England, West Indies, Ireland

England, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies reached the Super 8 stage. Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan and Australia made the semi-finals, and England beat Australia in the final in Barbados to win their first ICC trophy.

Mahela Jayawardene scored the most runs (302), Dirk Nannes took the most wickets (14), and Kevin Pietersen was Player of the Tournament.

T20 World Cup 2012 Winner: West Indies

Sri Lanka hosted the fourth ICC T20 World Cup in 2012, the first time the tournament was held in Asia. Twelve teams played 27 matches:

1. Group A: England, India, Afghanistan
2. Group B: Australia, West Indies, Ireland
3. Group C: Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, South Africa
4. Group D: Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh

Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, England, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and India reached the Super 8 stage. Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia made the semi-finals, and the West Indies beat hosts Sri Lanka in the final in Colombo to win their first T20 title under Darren Sammy.

Australia’s Shane Watson scored the most runs (249) and was Player of the Tournament, and Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis took the most wickets (15).

T20 World Cup 2014 Winner: Sri Lanka

Bangladesh hosted the fifth ICC T20 World Cup in 2014, which expanded to 16 teams. After a first round, ten teams played in the Super 10 stage: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and the Netherlands. Sri Lanka, India, West Indies and South Africa reached the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka beat India in the final in Dhaka to win their first T20 World Cup, led by Lasith Malinga. Virat Kohli scored the most runs (319) and was Player of the Tournament, and Imran Tahir took the most wickets (12).

T20 World Cup 2016 Winner: West Indies

India hosted the sixth ICC T20 World Cup in 2016 from 8 March to 3 April. Ten teams played in the Super 10 stage, split into two groups:

1. Group 1: West Indies, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan
2. Group 2: New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia

England, New Zealand, India and the West Indies reached the semi-finals. In the final at Eden Gardens, Carlos Brathwaite hit Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in the last over to win the West Indies their second title, again under Darren Sammy.

Tamim Iqbal scored the most runs (295), Mohammad Nabi took the most wickets (12), and Virat Kohli was Player of the Tournament for his 273 runs.

T20 World Cup 2021 Winner: Australia

The BCCI hosted the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman. In the Super 12 stage, Group 1 had England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and Group 2 had India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Scotland, Namibia and New Zealand. England met New Zealand and Pakistan met Australia in the semi-finals.

In the final in Dubai, Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets to win their first T20 title. David Warner was Player of the Tournament (289 runs in 7 matches), Babar Azam scored the most runs (303), and Wanindu Hasaranga took the most wickets (16).

T20 World Cup 2022 Winner: England

Australia hosted the eighth edition in 2022. India, New Zealand, Pakistan and England reached the semi-finals, and England beat Pakistan in the final at the MCG, with Sam Curran and Ben Stokes starring, to win their second T20 title, 12 years after their first. Sam Curran was Player of the Tournament for his 13 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2024 Winner: India

The West Indies and the USA co-hosted the ninth edition in 2024, the first with 20 teams. India, Afghanistan, England and South Africa reached the semi-finals. In the final in Barbados, India beat South Africa by seven runs, built on Virat Kohli’s 76 off 59 balls and Hardik Pandya’s 3 for 20, including the final over. Kohli was Player of the Match in the final, and Jasprit Bumrah was Player of the Tournament for his outstanding bowling throughout the event.

T20 World Cup 2026 Winner: India

India and Sri Lanka co-hosted the tenth edition from 8 February to 8 March 2026. India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final to retain their title and become the first team to win three T20 World Cups.
