ICC Set to Launch 4-Day Test Matches in Next WTC Cycle; India, England, Australia to Continue with 5-Day Format.
In a significant shift to the traditional format of Test cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to introduce four-day Test matches during the 2027–29 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. This move is aimed at making the game more accessible and financially viable for smaller Test-playing nations while maintaining the integrity of marquee series.
Four-Day Tests for Emerging Nations
The ICC’s proposal seeks to ease the logistical and financial burden on cricket boards with limited resources. These four-day Tests are expected to allow nations with tighter schedules and smaller budgets to host three-Test series within three weeks, making the format more sustainable. To preserve the balance of play, the minimum number of overs per day will be increased from 90 to 98.
Five-Day Format to Stay for Big Series
Despite the move, traditional five-day Test matches will continue for high-profile series involving cricketing giants like India, England, and Australia. Iconic rivalries such as the Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will not be affected by the four-day transition.
Timeline of Implementation
The four-day Test format will be introduced only from the 2027–29 WTC cycle. The ongoing 2025–27 WTC cycle, which begins on June 17, 2025, will proceed with the existing five-day Test structure for all teams.
A Step Toward Inclusive Test Cricket
This change is being viewed as a strategic move to broaden the appeal and accessibility of Test cricket. By accommodating shorter Tests, the ICC aims to provide more opportunities to emerging cricket nations without compromising the quality of the sport.
Conclusion
The ICC’s decision to bring in four-day Test matches reflects a flexible approach to ensure the growth and survival of Test cricket. While traditional formats will remain untouched for major teams, the new structure will open doors for greater participation and balanced competition in the global Test arena.
