Sunil Gavaskar (774)

Former Indian great Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for the most runs in a test series for India. He made 774 runs in 4 matches on his debut series, the 1970-71 India tour of West Indies. The legendary figure averaged 154.8 and smashed 4 centuries and 3 fifties with the highest score of 220 in the 5th test. These runs came against the contemporary best bowling lineup and on the fast pitches of West Indies. 

Sunil Gavaskar (732)

The first batsman to get to 10000 test runs, Sunil Gavaskar again etched his name on the elite chart of most runs in a test series for India with 732 runs in 6 matches, boasting an impressive average of 91.5. Gavaskar is the only Indian to make 700+ runs twice in a test series. The West Indies toured India in 1978-79 and Sunil Gavaskar went berserk on them again by piling many runs. The Mumbai-born batsman hit 4 hundred and 1 fifty in the series. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal (712*)

Batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal is a new addition to this premium list.  The Southpaw from Mumbai played his first series against England at home in 2024 and led the batting unit from the front with his outrageous batting, amassing 712* runs in 5 games at a staggering average of 89. His tally included 2 centuries and 3 fifties where both centuries were converted into double. Jaiswal drew everyone’s attention with his attacking batting and established himself as one of the greats to watch out for in the future. 

Virat Kohli (692)

India’s greatest-ever captain in tests, Virat Kohli has notched up the 4th most runs in a test series for India. In the 2014-15 India’s tour of Australia, Kohli was in golden touch with the bat. He accumulated 692 runs in 4 matches at a stunning average of 86.5, including 4 centuries and 1 fifty. This series marked the emergence of Virat Kohli in the test arena because of his ability to play on tough conditions. However, his out-of-the-world performance was not enough for India to win the series. The Aussies beat them by 2-0. 

Virat Kohli (655) 

The modern-day great Virat Kohli demonstrated one of the best batting displays in India during England’s tour of India in 2016-17. He toyed with the English bowlers throughout the series and made 655 runs in 5 matches, averaging a captivating 109.16. The Delhite batter hammered 2 centuries and as many fifties while 235 remained his best score in the series. Due to skipper Kohli’s marvelous batting, India won the five-match test series by 4-0.
