Shreyas Iyer Calls IPL “Bigger Than Premier League” Following Punjab Kings’ Loss to Delhi Capitals.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer made headlines after declaring the Indian Premier League (IPL) as “bigger than the Premier League” following his team’s narrow six-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals in an IPL 2025 thriller.
Despite scoring a solid 53 off 34 balls and guiding his team to a competitive total of 206/8, Iyer’s efforts fell short as Delhi Capitals chased down the target with three balls to spare. Speaking after the match, Iyer reflected on the scale and significance of the IPL, stating that the league’s competitive spirit and emotional intensity surpass even the globally acclaimed English Premier League (EPL).
“This tournament has grown immensely. The emotions, the drama, the fan following—it’s even bigger than the Premier League in many ways,” said Iyer.
The star batter also emphasized the importance of mental resilience, highlighting the need to stay calm and positive throughout the grueling tournament.
“Every team is equally poised in this tournament. You have to stay positive and come back with strong plans,” he added.
When asked about injuries, Iyer clarified that he had no major concerns, mentioning only a minor finger niggle that wouldn’t affect his participation in future matches.
He also acknowledged his team’s missteps, particularly in their bowling strategy.
“We bowled a few too many bouncers while trying to take wickets. That’s something we’ll correct in the next game,” Iyer admitted.
