India captain Shubman Gill hit the fastest double century in one-day international history on Wednesday, reaching 200 in just 117 balls as India chased down 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI in Guwahati.
Gill finished unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. His 200 came nine deliveries quicker than Ishan Kishan’s 126-ball double hundred against Bangladesh in Chattogram in December 2022, which had been the record for almost four years.
India won with 39 balls to spare and took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. It was only the second time a team has successfully chased 400 or more in an ODI, after South Africa’s 438 against Australia in 2006.
How the 406 chase unfolded
West Indies batted first and made 405 for 7, with centuries from John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114). On most days that would have been a match-winning total.
Gill and Rohit Sharma had other ideas. The openers put on 255 for the first wicket, which took most of the pressure off the chase. Rohit made 101 off 72 balls, and Gill reached his own hundred in 62 balls, the fastest of his ODI career. He then went up another gear and brought up his 200 off his 117th delivery.
The match produced 811 runs and five centuries in all.
Records Gill broke in Guwahati
- Fastest ODI double century: 117 balls, beating Ishan Kishan’s 126.
- Highest score in a successful ODI chase: 223*, beating Glenn Maxwell’s 201* against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup.
- Third-highest score in men’s ODIs: only Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s 237* are higher.
- Second ODI double century: Gill also made 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023. Rohit Sharma, with three, is the only other batter with more than one.

Rohit Sharma reaches 12,000 ODI runs
Rohit had a milestone of his own. A single off Roston Chase in the 16th over took him to 12,000 ODI runs, making him the third Indian to get there after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He did it in his 282nd innings; only Kohli, who needed 242, has reached the mark faster.
