Wiaan Mulder Smashes the Fastest Triple Century by a South African Captain in test cricket and Fifth-Highest Score in Test History.
In a historic Test innings that stunned the cricketing world, South Africa’s stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder blazed his way to an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe, registering the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket history.*
Mulder, playing just his 21st Test match, became only the second South African after Hashim Amla (311)* to reach the coveted triple-century mark. His phenomenal knock came off just 334 balls, making it not only the fastest triple-century by a South African but also the second-fastest in Test history, behind only Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball triple ton against South Africa in 2008.
The 26-year-old allrounder reached 300 in the opening hour of day two, having finished day one at a staggering 264*. He added a rapid 67 runs in just 37 balls alongside Kyle Verreynne before declaring at 626/5, just 33 runs shy of Brian Lara’s all-time record score of 400*.
Top 5 Highest Individual Scores in Test History:
- Brian Lara – 400* (2004)
- Matthew Hayden – 380 (2003)
- Brian Lara – 375 (1994)
- Mahela Jayawardene – 374 (2006)
- Wiaan Mulder – 367* (2025)
Mulder’s blistering innings included 49 fours and 4 sixes, and his strike rate of 109.88 is now the highest ever for any Test triple-centurion. Notably, he is also the first South African captain to score a triple-century, filling in for injured regular skipper Keshav Maharaj.
Cricket fans and analysts were stunned by Mulder’s decision to declare with a world record in sight, but the allrounder prioritized team strategy over personal glory. “Records are special, but winning is the ultimate goal,” Mulder said at the post-session press conference.
