ODI cricket is one of the most loved formats of the game among cricket teams. 50 years back in 1971, England and Australia took part in the first-ever ODI match. Australia ended the match as the winner and England became the first team to lose a Day International match. So far, more than 4000 ODI matches have been played among the 25 ODI Cricket-playing nations. The current 12 teams with ODI status are India, Australia, and England. New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and Ireland.
Losing and winning are part of any game. Over the years we have seen teams like Australia, India, and Pakistan have been conquering 50-over cricket. Australia has won the most number of ODI matches (614), followed by India (567) and Pakistan (520). India has played the highest number of ODI games to date (1058). Let’s talk about the teams with the most losses in ODI.

Sri Lankan Cricket Team Top At Most Losses In ODI Cricket
The Sri Lankan team has made it to the bizarre list of most losses in ODI by a team, being at the top. The Island nation has played 932 matches so far and lost 455 games. The winning percentage of this small country is 46.13. From 1990-2011, this team used to rule in the One Day Internationals, still, after the retirement of Lankan greats like Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kumar Sangakkara, the team lost its dignity in ODIs. They are yet to find match-winners, who can rescue them from this drastic phase. Sri Lanka won their only World Cup title in 1996 under Arjuna Ranatunga’s leadership.
Indian Cricket Team
Indian cricket team comes at the 2nd position on the list, with 445 losses in 1066 games. Being in 2nd place on the list of most losses in ODI, the country of 1.5 billion has won 559 matches also, which is the 2nd highest by any country. More or less, India has always been at its best in the 50-over format, especially after 2000. India has won 4 ICC Trophies- the 1983 ICC World Cup under Kapil Dev, the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Championship under MS Dhoni’s guidance, and finally, the 2025 Champions Trophy under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. In the 2002 Champions Trophy, under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, India & Sri Lanka shared the trophy because rain washed out the final. Lately, India has proved itself in every 50 over ICC events however, has not worn the crown since 2013.
Pakistan Cricket Team
One of the Most cricket-loving countries in the world, the Pakistan cricket team is standing 3rd on the chart of most losses in ODI cricket. The Green Army has faced 4304 losses in ODI in 994 games and registered 516 victories with a winning percentage of 52.84. Nowadays, Pakistan is not playing like it used to play in the 1990s. The implementation of this team has declined since 2015, it is lacking players with the right mindset and attitude. In the 20th century, Pakistan registered victory in only one ICC event- the 2017 Champions Trophy.
West Indies Cricket Team
The West Indies cricket team has lost the 4th most number of matches in ODI cricket, 415 times in 882 matches. The Caribbean team has 423 victories with a winning percentage of 48.29. Cricket fans definitely miss the vintage West Indies team, which won the Cricket World Cup two consecutive times in 1975 and 1979. That team had champions like Sir Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd, and Andy Roberts. But at the same time, if you talk about the current West Indies side it has lost its charm in almost all formats of the game, probably due to the poor technique.
The Sri Lankan cricket team has lost the most matches in ODIs, 453.
Australia has won the most matches in ODI cricket, 611 games out of 1004.
Team India has won 559 matches, which is 2nd most by any team.
