From being the most dominant team in the 90s to being one of the feeble teams in the modern era, the saga of West Indies cricket is falling from the rise. At the beginning of the ODI format in the 1970s, West Indies had great batsmen like Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, and Desmond Haynes who assisted them in winning the first two editions of the World Cup (1975 & 1979). Later the Caribbeans got Brian Lara, Richardson, Chanderpaul, Gayle, etc who won many matches with their exceptional batting. However, the team saw a real decline since 2019 after the retirement of Gayle, Bravo, Pollard, Russell, etc from the format. Let’s have a look at the players with the most ODI Runs for the West Indies.
Top players with Most ODI Runs For West Indies
Top batsman with Most ODI Runs For West Indies are as follows –
Chris Gayle
Former Jamaican opener Chris Gayle surpassed Brian Lara to own the feat of most ODI runs for West Indies during the 2019 World Cup in England. Making his debut in 1999, Gayle played in the bowling-friendly era as well as in the batting-favored era but his fashion of smashing the bowlers remained the same always. He smacked 25 centuries and 53 fifties in ODIs.
Brian Lara
Probably the greatest left-hand batsman to play the game, Brian Lara finds himself in second place on the list. The Southpaw held the throne from 2007 to 2019 until Gayle took it from him. He made his ODI debut in 1990 and retired in 2007, scoring 10348 runs at an impressive average of 40.90 with the help of 19 centuries and 62 half-centuries against the bowlers like Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath, Waqar Younis, Shane Warne, Muralitharan, Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, etc.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Shivnarine Chanderpaul stunned the world with his unorthodox batting stance and had a career to cherish from 1994 to 2011. The elegant Southpaw featured in 268 games and mustered 8778 runs, averaging a fascinating 41.60 in an era dominated by fast bowlers, including 11 centuries and 59 fifties. He even scored 970 runs in 28 games in the World Cup at 40.62.
Desmond Haynes
One of the best batsmen to wear Maroon Jersey, Desmond Haynes finds himself in fourth place on the elite tally of most ODI runs for West Indies. Haynes was a classy batsman with a combination of aggressive and defensive strokeplay. From 1978 to 1994, the ace batter piled up 8648 runs at 41.37 while whacking 17 centuries and 58 fifties. In the 1979 Prudential World Cup, Haynes made 144 runs in four innings, helping West Indies to win their 2nd consecutive title.
Vivian Richards
Arguably the best ODI batsman of the 90s, Sir Vivian Richards amassed 6721 runs in 167 innings, maintaining a staggering average of 47. Richards had minimal footwork and a high backlift which allowed me to play big shots all around the ground. His aggressive style on the back of excellent hand-eye coordination helped him to finish his career with an impressive strike rate of 90.20 in an era where fast bowlers were a menace to the batsmen with the advantage of green tops and unlimited bouncers. Richards was a key performer in the 1979 World Cup triumph in England for the West Indies, contributing 217 runs in four innings, including a phenomenal 138* in 157 balls against England in the finals.
