The World Test Championship is the most desired ICC event after the ODI World Cup. The first edition of the WTC was commenced in 2019 and lasted till 2021. The ongoing season of the WTC is the 2nd installment which started back in 2021 and the final will be played between last-time runners India and Australia from 7th June to 11th June. In these two years, we have witnessed top batters pile up runs and become savior for their team, lets go through the batsmen with the most runs in the World Test Championship, 2021-23. 

Joe Root is Most Runs In World Test Championship

Joe Root 

The 2nd highest run-getter of the last WTC circle, English batting stalwart Joe Root tops the chart of most runs in the World Test Championship (2021-23). Representing his country in 22 games, Joe Root amassed 1915 runs at a captivating average of 53.19. In this period, he hit 8 centuries and 6 fifties with the highest score of 180* against India at Lord’s which came in a losing cause. 

Usman Khawaja 

Usman Khawaja who rejuvenated himself as an opener in the 2021-22 Ashes series, occupies the 2nd spot on this elite list of most test runs in the World Test Championship. Opening the batting in 16 matches for Australia, the Southpaw has scored 1608 runs, averaging a fantastic 69.91. Though he hammered 6 amazing hundred, his best has been 195* against South Africa in Sydney in 2023. 

Babar Azam 

Current Pakistani skipper Babar Azam made 1527 runs in 14 matches, which is the 3rd most runs in the World Test Championship, 2021-23. Babar Azam has been at peak form in the last few years. Having led his team in all matches during this timespan, the ace batsman smashed 10 fifties and 4 hundred. Despite giving his all to his team, Pakistan didn’t get success in this WTC edition. 

Marnus Labuschagne 

One of the vital cogs in the present Australian setup, Marnus Labuschagne gets himself in the 4th spot on the tally of most runs in the World Test Championship (2021-23) with 1509 runs. Possessing an average of 53.89, the right-hand top-order batter has demonstrated consistency against all odds. His tally of mammoth runs is incomplete without 5 centuries and as many fifties. 

Jonny Bairstow 

English wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow did not play any test match in the 2023 but still has kept himself alive on this honorable list. Being able to play in 15 games, Bairstow mustered 1285 runs at a healthy average of 51.40 with the highest score of 162 off 157 balls against New Zealand in Leeds in 2022. The veteran batter conferred his heart and soul in almost every inning in this WTC and aided in England’s victory.
