Purnima Sharma and Gurunath Sharma are Rohit’s parents. His father was a caretaker of a transport farm storehouse. He used to live with his grandparents and uncles at Borivali as his father was very poor. He joined cricket at a camp in 1999. Starting his career in List A for West Zone against Central Zone in Deodhar Trophy at Gwalior in March 2005, he was not always an opener. In fact, he started off as an Off-spinner who batted at number 8. His batting ability was noticed by Dinesh Lad, his childhood coach, and promoted him as an opener for his side and the “Hitman” scored his first century as an opener on debut. His performance shot him through his State Team, India A, and finally made it to the Indian International Team. He debuted in November 2013 in Tests. It was Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series at Eden Gardens. His appearance in T20I was in 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and in ODI was on 23rd June 2007 against Ireland. He even did not join the Indian Team as an Opener. He came into the team as 5 or 6 for T20Is and ODIs. It was after the India tour of Sri Lanka, 2011, he started his career as an Opener and he had not looked back since. On April 15th, 2019 he was selected as the Vice-Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. There had been a lot of talks around of Rohit Sharma replacing Virat Kohli as the captain of India in the shorter formats of Cricket. And as well be mentioned that Rohit’s record as a captain of a side in IPL has been far more superior to Virat Kohli, who has captained Royal Challengers Bangalore and have not a single title ever since. Due to on-field rests in the ongoing innings, Rohit has also captained India due to Virat Kohli being out of the field. His decisions than as a captain have also been better than the Indian Captain, as argued by many retired players of the game.

Rohit Sharma is also a very humane character involved with animal welfare, community health, and children welfare. In February 2015, Rohit joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to support the sterilization of homeless cats and dogs. In September 2015, Sharma joined an anti-poaching campaign in Kenya to save the wild animals of Africa including the last surviving northern white rhinoceros. On September 22, 2018, on “World Rhino Day”, Rohit Sharma was named as the WWF-India Rhino Ambassador.

A Sportsman of caliber has also been recognized by the Indian Government who awarded him the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2020. He is also the proud receiver of the GQ Award of the Sportsman of the Year presented to him in 2015.
