MS DHONI’S SUCCESS STORY – A TRUE LEGEND OF CRICKET

MS DHONI was born in Ranchi on 7th July in 1981 in a middle-class Hindu Rajput family. His father Pan Singh used to work at MECON in a junior management position. Devaki Devi is dhoni’s mother. The former Indian captain has one sister (Jayanti Gupta) and one brother. In childhood he liked to play football, he even played football at the district level. He didn’t have too much interest in cricket. Because of his school coach he started playing cricket as there was no wicket-keeper in his school team, MS DHONI used to go to DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shaymali. He had done well in school cricket. Based on the school performance MSD was selected in Commando Cricket Club and later in Vinoo Mankad under 16 championship, he performed well there.

MSD’S Idol

ADAM GILCHRIST and SACHIN TENDULKAR were his cricketing idols while growing up. He has played for Central Coal Field Limited also which was one of the good Cricket clubs of Ranchi. There he would get 50 rupees for every six. His good performance helped Coal Field to get into 1st division. Dhoni’s hard-hitting potential and good keeping caught the eyes of the selectors of the Bihar Cricket Association and MS DHONI got selected for the Bihar u-19 side for the 1998-1999 season, where MS DHONI made 176 runs in 5 matches. Bihar u-19 side couldn’t make into the quarter-finals. In the very next edition of the u-19 Cooch-Behar trophy, Bihar got into the final and they faced Punjab in Finals.

After winning the toss Bihar elected to bat first and MS DHONI’S 84 helped Bihar to make 357. But Punjab batted really well & Yuvraj Singh’s 358 assisted Punjab to get a mammoth score of 839 runs.  MS DHONI finished the tournament with 488 runs in 9 matches. He got 5 fifties, 17 catches & 9 stampings. He couldn’t find a place along with his fellow Indian teammate Yuvraj Singh in the INDIA U19 WC side. MS Dhoni’s height is 5 Ft 9 Inch.

MS Dhoni In RANJI TROPHY 

MS DHONI made his first appearance in the year 1999-2000 Ranji trophy session for Bihar. He scored 68 not out in the second innings of his debut match against Assam. In that session eighteen years old MSD finished with 283 runs in 5 matches. After that in the 2000-01 session, Dhoni smashed his maiden first-class century against Bengal although Bihar lost the match. MSD hit five fifties in the 2001-02 session. After the ban on the Bihar Team MS DHONI started playing for Jharkhand State Cricket Association from 2002 session. He smacked an unbeaten 128 against Assam in the first match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. 129 runs are his highest score in Vijay Hazare Trophy against Chhattisgarh in 2017. Dhoni was part of the east zone in the Deodhar trophy 2003-04 session and ended up with 244 runs in four matches including a century against the Central zone.

MSD IN INDIA A

In 2003 Duleep Trophy MSDHONI was named in East Zone squad over Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta. Dhoni’s stupendous performance in Duleep Trophy and six-hitting abilities drew the attention of selectors in the TRDW initiative and got him a place in India A squad for the tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. Against Zimbabwe xi, MS demonstrated his outstanding wicket keeping skills with 6 catches & 4 stumpings. Dhoni made 2 back to back centuries in Tri-series against Pakistan (120 & 119*).  MSD scored 362 runs in 6 matches with an average of 72.40. His brilliant knocks bewitched Indian selectors & Captain Sourav Ganguly.

MS Dhoni’s ODI DEBUT AND CAREER

MS DHONI made his ODI debut in 2004 against Bangladesh at the age of 23 under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership.  he got out for a duck in his very first match. In the next series against Pakistan MS DHONI got a chance once again to show his worth and this time he was promoted to bat at no 3 also. He scored 148 runs off just 123 deliveries at Visakhapatnam, which was the highest score by an Indian wicket-keeper at that time.

Dhoni did well in the next series also against Sri Lanka. He summed up 346 runs in the series including an unbeaten 183 off 145 balls in the 3rd match on 31st Oct 2006 of the series. Dhoni grabbed the Man of The Series award for his gutsy and phenomenal batting. After this series, MSD became a permanent wicket-keeper batsman of the Indian Cricket team. Dhoni was in the 2007 World Cup squad also, India didn’t do well in the tournament and people showed outrage towards them for getting eliminated in the group stage.

MSD AS Cricket Captain

MS DHONI was imparted captainship in 2008. Under MS DHONI’S leadership, India won the Commonwealth Bank tri-series against Australia & Sri Lanka on Australian soil for the first time. Australia toured India in 2009 and India won the series by 3-2, in that series MS DHONI played a gutsy knock of 124 runs off 107 balls which assisted India to win the game. With his sensational batting, MSD topped the ICC batting ranking in just 40 matches which is still a record.

2009 was a great year for Dhoni as he scored 1198 runs in 24 innings with a jaw-dropping average of 70.43 which rewarded him the no 1 spot in ICC ODI batting ranking and wicket-keeper captain of World ODI xi by ICC. He has captained India in two consecutive cricket world cups 2011 and 2015. 2011 World Cup was played in India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. India ended up winning the World Cup for the 2nd time under MS DHONI’S leadership. In the final match of the World Cup, 2011 MSD played a sensational knock 91 runs off 79 balls & Gautam Gambhir’s 96 runs helped India to win the final of the World Cup.

MS DHONI is considered the most dangerous batsman in death overs. The finishing six of Dhoni will always be remembered.  India won Championship Trophy in 2013 under MS DHONI’S leadership, in that tournament India played better than anyone else and didn’t lose a single match. India played really in the next ICC tournament also which was the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. MSD set a record by winning all the matches in the group stage. Against Zimbabwe Dhoni scored an unbeaten 85 to take his team home. This score is the highest score by an Indian captain in New Zealand.  Despite Dhoni’s well-made 65 runs, India lost the semi-final match against Australia, Ajinkya Rahane only contributed along with MS.  India ended their journey in the semi-finals. 

MS DHONI stepped down as captain from limited over format in January 2017 before the ODI series against England. He smashed 134 from 122 balls and made a 256-run partnership with Yuvraj Singh. In the same year, MS DHONI surpassed the record of Kumar Sangakkara’s 99 stumping by stumping Akila Dhananjaya in Yuzvendra Chahal’s ball. In the 2017 ODI series, Dhoni completed his 100th International half-century against Australia at Chennai on 17th Sep. MS DHONI completed 10000 runs during the ODI series against England in England.

MS DHONI made 193 runs in 3 matches ODI series against Australia in 2018 IN Australia. India won a bilateral series against Australia for the first time on Australian soil. MS DHONI was in the Indian squad in the 2019 Cricket World cup also. Throughout the tournament, Dhoni did well in keeping and had two half-centuries also. But despite good innings of 50 runs & Ravindra Jadeja’s 79 India lost the match in the semi-finals against New Zealand. This was MS DHONI’S 350th and last ODI match.

MS DHONI’S TEST DEBUT AND CAREER

DHONI made his test debut against Sri Lanka in December 2005 at the age of 24. Dhoni scored only 30 runs in the match and rain spoiled the match. In the very next series against Pakistan at Faisalabad, he smashed a quickfire century just off 93 deliveries which are fastest by an Indian wicket-keeper. In 2006 India traveled West Indies for a test & ODI series.

MS DHONI scored a quick 69 runs in the 2nd innings, after that he managed to score only 96 suns in the next six innings but in this series, Dhoni did magic with his gloves. He finished the series with 17 dismissals (13 catches and 4 stumpings). He became India’s Test captain in 2008 after Anil Kumble’s retirement. Under Dhoni’s captainship, India became no 1 test side in the world for the first time in 2009 by beating Sri Lanka in 2 match test series & won the test mace. 

Gavaskar Thropy

In 2012-13 Border Gavaskar trophy MS DHONI led India whitewashed Australia for the first time in the history of cricket. MSD registered his highest test score 224 runs off 265 balls in the first match at Chennai and individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper batsman. He also completed his 4000-test runs and became the first Indian wicket-keeper batsman to do so. His last test series was 2014-15 Australia tour.

India lost the first two matches of the series and MS DHONI announced his retirement from the longest format of the game in the third test on 26th December 2014. He made unbeaten 24 runs in his last test innings. He took eight catches and did one stumping which was a record of most dismissals by an Indian wicket-keeper in a match before it was broken by Wriddhiman Saha in 2018. Dhoni captained India in 60 test matches and won 27 matches which were best at that time. DHONI has 294 dismissals in test cricket (256 catches and 38 stumpings).

MS DHONI’S T20 CAREER

MS DHONI played his first T20 match against South Africa in 2006 and this was India’s first T20 match also. Dhoni scored 0 in that match but made two dismissals.  in the inaugural T20 World Cup he led India to win the World Cup. He made 154 runs in the tournament and captained brilliantly. After that MS led India to four more world cups (2009, 2012, 2014, and 2016).

Team India played till semi-finals in 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cup, in both tournaments he led the side exceptionally which made a huge impact on the team and assisted the team to do well. MS DHONI’S last bowl run out against Bangladesh in 2016 T20 WC off Hardik Pandya’s ball when Bangladesh needed 2 runs in the last ball will be remembered which kept India alive in the Tournament. His highest T20 score (56) came off against England in just 36 balls with a strike rate of 155.56 in 2017 at Chinnaswamy stadium.

In 2007 India comes in 1st position in cricket t20 when MS Dhoni was captain.

IPL CAREER Of MS Dhoni

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS bought MS DHONI FOR 1.5 million USD in the first-ever IPL session and he was the most expensive player of that session. He has captained CHENNAI SUPER KINGS IN IPL for 11 seasons and in the 2016, 2017 season he played for Rising Pune Supergiants as CSK was banned for two seasons due to match-fixing allegations. Dhoni has quite an impressive performance in IPL. He smashed 56 off 29 balls against Kings Xi Punjab in 2010.

He made 16 runs in last over against Irfan Pathan and took his team into semi-finals. Dhoni’s other best innings were against Mumbai Indians in 2012 in the semifinals match when he scored 51 off 20 balls which helped CHENNAI SUPER KINGS to reach a big total of 187 runs. MS DHONI displayed his vintage batting again against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018 at Chinnaswamy stadium, HE Smacked bowlers all around the ground, scored 70 off 34 balls with the help of 7 sixes and one four while chasing the score of 206 runs. CHENNAI SUPER KINGS won the match by 5 wickets.

MSD played two super knocks in IPL 2019, against Rajasthan Royals he hit Jaydev Unadkat for three sixes to notch up 75 off 46 balls to take his team to 175, CSK won that match by 8 runs. DHONI almost pulled off a win against RCB by scoring 84 off 48 balls, CSK needed 26 runs in last over MS hit 24 runs, CSK fell short by 2 runs. But DHONI proved again how deadly he is in death overs. He has led Chennai to 3 IPL TITLES (2010,2011 & 2018) and under DHONI’S leadership, Chennai is the only to qualify for playoffs in every IPL season has played.
